Acne light treatment

It can be very disconcerting to have acne. Acne is a skin disease which affects over 50 million Americans a year. This is perhaps the reason why there are more over the counter acne creams and medication then almost any other medication. It is a widespread problem and usually people who are ailed with acne try to solve it with face cleansing solutions, topical creams or antibiotics. However in some of the cases no matter what you try (whether it is over the counter medicating or prescription drugs), you end up with a more aggravated case of acne. Thus then you will have to look for alternative methods of treatment for acne. One such method that has been proven effective against acne is definitely acne light treatment.

Acne light treatment stems from the principle that using sunlight has been proven effective in the treatment of acne. It has been long since know that sunlight has a positive effect on acne and it reduces the bacteria on your skin pores by killing them with Ultraviolet radiation. That is perhaps why many dermatologists recommend getting out into the sunlight for secondary treatment of acne. However, as you know, sunlight contains excessive amount of Ultra violet radiation which may have also damaging affects on your skin. So prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause you more harm then good in your treatment of acne. Thus alternative acne light treatment methods have been devised that is safer on the skin. These methods do not contain UV radiation which is harmful to your skin, but they do contain the other components of sunlight to help stop acne.

The Types of Light Treatment

There are currently two main types of light treatments available for Acne.

  • Blue Light is mainly used to kill P.acnes. P.acnes is a special type of an acne causing bacteria which causes inflammation at the area where acne is present. As a result, molecules called porphyrins are released near the acne affected area. By using blue light for treatment, it has been seen that porphyrins which are exposed to light turn into anti bacterial free radical, which devours the acne bacteria. Much research shows that in as little as two weeks, you can clear up acne completely with this method.
  • Red Light is generally used to bring the inflammation down and to rejuvenate the skin cells into repairing themselves. There are marked improvements in the skin when red light is used for acne treatment

The Cure of Light

Thus by the usage of blue light and red light therapy you can stop acne and get marked improvement in your skin. However you will need several light therapies that are done repeatedly, in order to get the results that you need. For those people who are having trouble going to a dermatologist for repeated light treatment, there is the option of home based light kits which you can use to fight acne. Although their light concentration may be lower, they end up being reusable for many times.
